Through the analysis of the essential connotation of the rolling sphere method, the drawbacks of traditional mapping method for the designers were pointed out, the reverse use of rolling sphere method to calculate the lightning rod height and how to determine the scope of protection of the lightning rod and lightning line on the slope were studied and analyzed, the significance of the boundary conditions in the process of using rolling sphere method to determine the scope of lightning protection was clarified. In the process of using the rolling ball method to reverse calculate lightning rod height, taking that applying the double same height lightning rod to protect spherical tank as a specific example, a new quantitative calculation method was proposed, which was based on accurate delineation of the scope of protection of critical curve, using geometric principles to determine the scope of protection in the rolling sphere method for the reverse calculation. Taking the analysis of the scope of protection of the different elevation of the ground for wedging, and taking the lightning rod and lightning line on the slope surface to protect the building as example, the formula for the protection scope of the lightning rod and lightning line on the slope and the method for determining the boundary line of protection scope were proposed.
